Oracy

In school, oracy is a powerful tool for learning; by teaching students to become more effective speakers and listeners we empower them to better understand themselves, each other and the world around them. It is also a route to social mobility, empowering all students, not just some, to find their voice to succeed in school and life.

Why is it important?

Research by experts, such as Voice21 and the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), have shown that children's oracy skills have a direct impact on their progress in other subjects and is an integral part of the curriculum.  Findings from the recent study 'We Need to Talk' by the Oracy Education Commission showed that 'There is very strong evidence that oracy education helps children in learning to, through and about talk, listening and communication'.

Our rationale for why we are so passionate about oracy and how we implement the teaching of oracy across the curriculum is laid out in our Oracy intent, implementation and impact statement.

How do we teach oracy?

We promote high levels of oracy from a young age and our staff are continuously modelling and scaffolding this to our learners.  Our progression of language structures document is an example of the sentence stems we may use in different year groups to enable our children to articulate their thinking.

We also recognise that success in oracy will look different whether you're a Reception learner or a Year 6 learner. Our Oracy curriculum progression map shows what we expect our children to be doing in each year group and gives examples of events in our curriculum that will support this learning.
